We are excited to present our Annual Report for 2023. In 2023, we proudly reached 8% of children and young people in Ireland. The year was full of collaborations across counties, vibrant youth-led festivals and young musicians creating new music with professional artists.
Throughout 2023, Music Generation:
- reached 115,936 programme participants.
- taught 45 musical genres.
- supported 1,246 live performances by children and young people.
Young Musicians Collaborating Across Counties
US Navy Band. A special collaboration took place as 37 young musicians from Music Generation programmes in Mayo, Waterford, Kerry and Galway County took part in an inspiring masterclass with the US Naval Forces Europe and Africa Band. Read more here.
A Deep Ravine. Over 100 young musicians from Cavan, Monaghan, Tyrone, Fermanagh, Scotland and Ukraine joined forces to create the Music Generation Cross Border Youth Folk Orchestra. It is led by Music Generation Cavan/Monaghan. The young musicians had musical backgrounds in classical, trad, rock/pop and folk music. Their premiere performance took place in November 2023. We popped into their rehearsals to chat with the young people about their experiences and find out why they joined this unique project. See more here.

Youth-Led Festivals
SubSounds Youth Music Festival was a day to remember for over 100 young musicians and bands from Music Generation programmes in Dublin City, Fingal, South Dublin, Wicklow, Meath, and Kildare. On that sunny Saturday in June the atmosphere at TU Dublin's Tallaght Campus was electric as contemporary pop, rock, folk, jazz and DJ sets filled the air. Watch more here.
Jam@TheRoyal was presented by Music Generation Waterford and Theatre Royal. Young musicians took over the theatre for three days working with professional musicians and technicians. The young musicians had the opportunity to learn more about live performance, sound production, technical set-up, how to form bands and rehearse. It finished with a superb live performance. Creating New Music with Professional Artists
The Causeway Suite was composed by Multi Award-Winning Scottish musician Mohsen Amini in collaboration with the members of Nós Nua - Music Generation Louth's Youth Folk Orchestra. See more here. Nós Nua also composed 'The Selkie Set' in collaboration with Dr Ryan Molloy. The set of five new pieces of music embraces syncopated rhythms, funky chords and interesting time signatures. ‘Music Gives Me a Reason’ was written and released as a 10th Birthday Anthem for Music Generation Cork City. It was a huge collaborative effort bringing young musicians together from all programmes including The Kabin Studio rappers, Trad musicians from Creative Tradition, brass players and more.
